We acknowledge that many events are happening around the world. In these times, information is so readily available, and overdigestion of news can impact overall mood and functioning. We encourage this community to approach sources of information with a critical mind as you continue to stay informed.

CELEBRATE: We wish everyone and their families a happy Lunar New Year. May the year of the dragon bring you joy, prosperity, and opportunity! We hope everyone is able to celebrate with loved ones.

THE MYTH OF NIAN: Some Lunar New Year traditions come from the myth of “Nian,” an underwater beast. One version of the legend has it that during New Year’s Eve,  Nian would crawl into the land and attack nearby villages, consuming all their resources and eating villagers, who would therefore hide or flee to remote mountains. Things changed on one New Year’s Eve, when a mysterious old man decided not to hide, and instead scared Nian away by hanging red banners on the door, lighting firecrackers and donning red clothing. The following day, everyone else was surprised to find that the man was unharmed. From then on, wearing red, using red banners as decorations, and lighting firecrackers remained Lunar New Year traditions, and continued to be followed today.

LEGISLATION:

  • With the 2024 legislative sessions underway, new states have introduced PSYPACT legislation. Here is a list of participating states https://psypact.org/mpage/psypactmap
  • For those who are unfamiliar with PSYPACT: “Approved in February 2015 by the ASPPB Board of Directors, the Psychology Interjurisdictional Compact (PSYPACT) has been created to facilitate telehealth and temporary in-person, face-to-face practice of psychology across jurisdictional boundaries. PSYPACT is an interstate compact, which is an agreement between states to enact legislation and enter into a contract for a specific, limited purpose or address a particular policy issue.”
