Member-At-Large (North American) Candidate:
Saranya Sundaram Patel, Ph.D., M.R.C.
I am a clinical neuropsychologist based in Dallas, TX, and I currently serve as the chair of the ANA Research Committee. As an early-career psychologist, I have greatly benefited from the opportunities provided by the ANA to connect with colleagues who share the vision of culturally sensitive neuropsychology. As a South Indian, I bring a deep personal and professional commitment to the mission of the ANA. My heritage provides me with a firsthand understanding of the critical importance of culturally sensitive neuropsychological care for Asian populations, and I am dedicated to advancing this mission as a candidate for Member-at-Large. I have experienced firsthand the empowerment of being part of an organization that embraces and celebrates cultural identity, and I am deeply grateful for what the ANA has offered me. Now, I am eager to give back to this vibrant community and help the organization continue to grow by serving as a Member-at-Large.
If elected, I will work closely with the board to promote inclusiveness and embrace diversity within ANA, facilitating inter-committee collaboration and strengthening connections both within and outside the organization. I would be honored to continue serving this community as a Member-at-Large and contributing to our collective mission of advancing culturally competent neuropsychological services for all individuals of Asian descent.
Secretary Candidate:
Katee Yang, Psy.D.
I joined ANA while I was starting my fellowship at New York University Comprehensive Epilepsy Center and was excited to find a group specific to supporting neuropsychology in the Asian population. It was also during my fellowship years that I was exposed to conducting neuropsychological evaluations in Mandarin, and ANA provided me with an immense number of resources and connections. Then, to be able to participate in the INS conference in Taiwan, especially as a first generation Taiwanese American, it further ignited my passion to connect with other Asian neuropsychologists and promote the importance of cross-cultural competency.
I am currently an assistant professor of neuropsychology at Columbia Irving Medical Center and conduct neuropsychological evaluations in both English and Mandarin. I am invested in developing our ANA community by encouraging, mentoring and teaching students, who are also bilingual. Additionally, I am active in the Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center (ADRC) at Columbia University by providing neuropsychological consultation for research on the Asian aging/dementia. If elected secretary, I hope to continue building and fostering communication between our executive board and the international/Asian American population. In addition, I hope to spread this passion for diversity and culture, which I have already experienced through chatting with many ANA members, to future members, colleagues, and trainees.
Trainee Representative Elect Candidate:
Charlie Su, M.S.
I am a student committee member applying to serve the Asian Neuropsychological Association as the trainee representative. Currently, I curate the bimonthly research digests, which I use to highlight disparities in cognitive health and research representation among individuals of Asian descent. My own research has primarily focused on evaluating commonly used tools for psychometric equivalence across race/ethnicity. ANA’s collective vision for improving health outcomes among individuals of Asian descent through four specific pathways aligns well with my values and interests.
I believe networking is often undervalued by trainees for its utility in supporting clinical skills development and improving research productivity. I aim to consult with the ANA family to support trainees in identifying and navigating potential cultural barriers that impede participation in networking opportunities. In my role as a trainee subcommittee member for the National Academy of Neuropsychology, I created an initiative to enhance mentorship for trainees without a strong neuropsychology presence at their home university and organized a panel at the annual conference to introduce diverse career settings to trainees. Expanding my professional development with ANA to serve the needs of our underrepresented community will be particularly meaningful for me.
As a 1.5 generation Taiwanese American, I recognize the rich diversity within our communities and the unique challenges we face. I aim to actively engage the ANA family in exploring the range of our lived experiences and needs through an intersectional lens. Through this, I can contribute to ANA’s overarching mission to support our colleagues in addressing disparities and needs in training, ultimately enhancing patient outcomes.
Since I first discovered ANA, I have been struck by the warmth and generous mentorship permeating throughout our community at all levels. I would be deeply honored to advance outreach efforts so that more can find their professional home with us.
